I get asked quite a lot, how one can break into product management. My own journey is one way to break-in, but you were still wondering - what to read, what to do & more. This is that article.
Firstly, anyone can be a PM. Dont let people tell you - You have to a degree, a path, or be good at a specific thing. There are many, many variations of a PM - design PM, Technical PM, Growth PM & more. So whatever your current path is, there is a PM adjacent role to it. So worry not!
Okay, but how do I break in?
The easiest way is to build something(I ofcourse didnt do this, but I also didnt have a twitter account & read zero business articles, so old me didnt know). You dont have to build engineering things though, play your strength. If you are good building communities, build something like The Product Folks, if you are good at design - make stuff like how can I make X app better, if you are in growth - grow your blog, someone’s twitter account, runs ads. Do it to show who you are & what you do well.
If you are not this person to take charge and build first, many PMs tell you that this is not good, you HAVE to show ownership. I dont fully agree, you are starting a new job & need support, which is okay. What you should then do is, target companies you want to be at. I would say look at startups & a break into it, then pick the path you need to go towards your dream company. Find places you want to apply at, and write to them. Say why you are a good fit.
I ofcourse dont want to draft that email for you, but here is a structural thought you could follow :
I like your startup for 1,2,3 reasons. I absolutely think I would be a great addition because of 3,4,5. I also noticed this on your app/website - My thoughts on this are 6,7. Think it will change this % or work in the favour of this
But, dont stop at one email, find multiple people you would love to work with & write to them. While you also are doing this, make your own case study up and answer it. Imagine if this was an ecommerce startup - Write something like - “Growth experiments to increase checkout + UX changes”
If you already work at a company that you want to transition into PM role there, you should talk to people on that team, read every document they make publicly available & try to gauge how they think. If you work at a startup you are a designer, operator, marketing, sales, generalist person looking to transition, you know an aspect about your customers that others dont. Make a case of what should be built, BUT dont just say it. Make it like the documents you read, bring it up to PMs, or VPs whoever it is that you thing will appreciate your thinking and give you feedback on it. When they do that, let them know that you would love to transition & let them with you, figure out how to get you where you want to be.
Ok so what if you only got interested partially but dont even know it is the job you want? Well then you should not talk to people unless you read more on it. You should ask a PM you are close to at work or otherwise to let you know what it is that you should read, and get going.
If you were asking me I would suggest these :
Obviously there is more great content out there, but I would suggest you start here & see where it takes you!
Once you read all that, shadow more people at work and learn what happens ON THAT JOB. Dont jump into a career move unless you absolutely know :)
